Outfitting -- Our Finishing Details

We strive to provide unsurpassed outfitting on all of our models. Each of our designs -- from recreational dayboats to expedition touring models -- are appointed with full deck rigging with a focus on maximizing utility, without unnecessary clutter. The result is a highly-functional, beautifully-refined and sophisticated craft.

Deck Lines

Deck Lines
All Current Designs kayaks -- from our recreational designs to our high-efficiency expedition models -- include full perimeter deck lines. The lines run from the cockpit to the bow and stern providing grab points along the full length of the kayak. The ample deck lines make loading and unloading easier, and are greatly appreciated in rescue situations. The cord is stretch resistant to remain taught and has a reflective weave to increase visibility for added safety.

Recessed Fittings
Our practical deck rigging is complimented by recessed deck fittings. This clean, no snag design is functional, while adding to the sleek appearance of each model.
h-[channel side seamSeams
We use a three component process to bond the deck to the hull in our composite models. The first component is a rugged 'H' channel extrusion that joins the two components into one. Next is a high tenacity marine adhesive that glues the components together. Finally we lay a very strong fiberglass biaxial roving strip around the inside perimeter of the deck-to-hull joint. The final result is a worry free, waterproof structural bond, an eye catching sheerline, and an interior finish that is smooth and snag-free.
Some models are available with a fiberglass seam option. The seam is fiberglass tape impregnated with gel coat in your choice of color, and replaces the 'H' channel extrusion. It's just as strong as the standard method and gives you another way to make a statement about your passion for paddling.

Rubber HatchComposite Hatch

Bulkheads and Hatches
Bulkheads are the components that create the watertight storage compartments in the hull. In our composite models, bulkheads are made of thermoformed composites. The rear bulkhead is glassed-in, adding dimensional stability and stiffness to the rear of the cockpit. Rotomolded models have firmly secured, closed cell foam bulkheads.
Hatches allow entry into the storage areas. Our composite-style hatch is flush with the deck and features a neoprene gasket that seats perfectly into the molded deck recess. The hatch, when strapped, compresses the gasket to form a watertight seal. Our rubber-style hatch provides a reliable seal without the use of straps. Several of our kayaks also incorporate a flexible neoprene seal, protected by a hard hatch cover.

.seatSeat
Our contoured, padded seat base extends forward to provide excellent upper leg support. The seat is integrated into vertical seat tabs that are anchored to the coaming and the hull. The seat is held firmly in place and the side tabs provide excellent lateral support. The side tabs are also a convenient place to install pads for a customized fit. A padded and adjustable seat back gives comfortable lower back support, and the neoprene cover has a built-in pocket for additional padding. A back band is standard on some models, and optional for others.

Rudder System
Developed by Current Designs, the durable foiled blade and anodized delta system is strong and easy to use. Rudders create steering efficiency and in certain wind and water conditions offer greater control than skegs. Our rudder system allows your paddle strokes to focus on thrust while allowing your feet to stay the course.

Adjustable foot brace/rudder toe control
Most composite kayaks include a Sea-Dog foot brace/rudder toe control for 10" of adjustable travel with a flip of the lever. Kestrels have an injection molded nylon foot brace. Other Rotomolded models have Werner's Yakima-style adjustable foot brace/sliding rudder control.

SmartTrack Rudder System
Standard on the new Oracle and Stratus, and optional on most composite touring kayaks, the SmartTrack rudder has a unique foil shaped blade so water moves around the blade with less turbulence. A single retraction cord allows easy raising of the blade into the blade housing. The adjustable foot brace/rudder control has a two piece pedal, the lower half locks firmly in place for a solid brace. Steering is controlled with light pressure from your toes on the top half.

Skeg
To increase tracking efficiency on certain models we employ a drop down fin or skeg. A skeg holds the kayak on course, resisting its natural tendency to weathercock, or turn into the wind. The benefits of a skeg over a rudder include fewer moving parts, less weight, and a cleaner deck appearance. When the skeg is retracted the kayak is highly maneuverable, when deployed the boat holds its course. Skegs can be partially deployed and are just as effective at course correction.
